Teen with heart defect looked for love, but found death instead



Levi Bernard was a quiet high school senior who worked at McDonald's, wanted to be a carpenter and walked down the street with his nose buried in a Bible.

Born with a heart defect and deaf in one ear, the skinny 19-year-old Bronxite longed to fit in.

He didn't have a girl, and one autumn day he arranged to meet a stranger for sex.

Her name was Lovely, and the date ended in death.

"Lovely" turned out to be Latisha Lindsay, a 300-pound Bronx mom with a scary scowl - and Bernard turned her away at his door, prosecutors say.

Hours later, Lovely got revenge.

An armed trio burst into Bernard's Baychester apartment and gunned down the 120-pound teen in front of his family - while Lovely egged them on.

"You're going to get yours," she reportedly gloated.

This month, close to five years after Bernard's murder, the last member of the vicious gang - Terry Bazemore, the man accused of firing the lethal bullet - will be brought to trial. Opening arguments are set for Tuesday.

Lindsay, now in an upstate prison, refused to discuss the Nov. 16, 2004, murder.

Prosecutors have pieced together an account of the crime, which was caught on a 911 tape.

Bernard was home alone when he and Lindsay met on the Internet or a phone chat line. They made a date to have sex at his house, she later told police.

When Lindsay arrived, the shy Bernard rejected the hulking woman - and she was furious, prosecutors said.

Lindsay later told cops they had sex, but he didn't "satisfy" her.

Lindsay called the house, threatening to send her brothers to shoot Bernard. Embarrassed, Bernard told his family he didn't know her - but called 911 three times to report she had emptied trash cans on his lawn.

"She threatened with her brothers coming here to shoot me," he told a 911 operator at 7:20 p.m. Cops eventually came and filed a complaint on his behalf. At 8:35 p.m., he called again.

"I just saw the girl outside, and she said her brother's going to come back," Bernard pleaded.

"I don't understand," the perplexed operator said. "You said they were there already. You need them to come back?"

"I'm being threatened," Bernard repeated three times.

Less than two hours later, Lovely made good on her threats, prosecutors say.

She rounded up cousin Darren Gunter and his friends - the 6-foot-6-inch, 260-pound Bazemore and his half brother Roy Gray - and told them she was raped.

Like a vigilante posse, they smashed through the door of the Hammersley Ave. house Bernard shared with his mother and 13-year-old brother, Khari, prosecutors said.
